Backstory

Eira is descended from failed ambassadors to the White Woods in the first generation. These settlers integrated into one of the more peaceful tribes, trading their Valley traditions for White Woods tribal traditions. Several generations later, Eira’s father Sigmund was told of the growing civilization in the Valley and Eira, being the eldest with a great want for knowledge and naturally gifted with magic, persuaded him to let her go try her luck in the Valley. After a long and perilous journey (and proving her Valley descent) she was allowed to enter. However, because of the tensions between the tribes in the White Woods, Grasslands, and Desert, and the prevailing anti-tribe mindset since the battle with the Ursine in the first generation, Eira’s tribal ancestry and obvious face tattoos prevented her from getting anything but the most menial of jobs. Desperate for knowledge yet unable to enter the university, she begged a job from the royal keeper of supplies, asking to be made a shepherdess in order to watch the royal mages practicing in the field nearby. Through observation and trial and error, Eira learns enough magic to fend off an attack from raiders while in charge of the flock, earning respect from the royal keeper. That, along with her cooking abilities for the other shepherds, convinces him to assign her to King James II’s party as assistant cook. Hopeful for more opportunities for magic learning, Eira joins the group.

Summary

Eira is a quiet, stand offish person with an intense curiosity and a strong moral compass. She isn’t beholden to King James nor is she against him, she is simply there for a chance to learn more about magic. Though she has to get past the hurdles of anti-tribism and the awkwardness of a new culture, she’s determined to learn all she can and one day become a master at magic.
